The Role of the Westport Public Library Board of Trustees

The Westport Public Library plays an important academic, cultural and social role in the Westport community, and each member of the Board of Trustees contributes his/her time and energy to ensure that the library sustains its relevance in a changing and competitive environment.

The Westport Public Library Board is an activist and democratic board that meets regularly for the purpose of providing oversight and direction for the library. All board members join one or more committees and attend monthly board meetings.

The role of a board member is to make a real and substantive contribution to the mission of the library in all of the following ways:

1. Believe in and be an active advocate for the mission and vision of the library.
2. Adhere to the library code of ethics.
3. Contribute to the effective operation of the Board.
4. Regularly attend Board and committee meetings and actively engage in those meetings.
5. Attend programs and fund-raising events.
6. Identify and cultivate relationships to support the library.
7. Contribute personal and professional expertise for the benefit of the library.
8. Give an annual financial contribution to the library and assist in all fund-raising efforts.
9. Avoid conflicts of interest and keep the Board apprised of any conflicts, whether they are real or perceived.
10. Self-evaluate performance and step down if unable to fulfill expectations.
