Summer Family Favorites Inside and Out

July 7, 2011

Out on Jesup Green the birdies are flying—not just sparrows and robins, but badminton birdies. The Westport Public Library is now checking out badminton, bocce, and croquet sets for patrons to enjoy on the ‘front lawn.’

The games are compliments of the Downtown Merchants Association, and are available to check out at the AV desk on the Riverwalk Level.

Those who prefer a quieter pace can play on the built-in chessboard table along the Riverwalk  or meander into The Great Hall on the main floor to contribute to the ongoing jigsaw puzzles.

The Café is making it easy to keep cool with refreshing seasonal specials, including naturally flavored iced teas and lemonade. The Café is staying open later on long summer evenings, too.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are extra special. On Tuesdays in July, drop in to the Internet area from 2 to 4 pm for answers to all tech-related questions about downloading music, e-readers, tablet PCs, and more.   Through Labor Day, every Thursday at 2 is a tour of the Library that starts at the Café; it’s perfect for newcomers or anyone who wants to know more about the Library.  And classic movies play on selected Thursday afternoons in July and August. Check out the Sizzling Summer Film Series for titles, dates, and times.

For children a variety of story times, indoors and out, run all summer, in the Library, on Jesup Green, as well as at Longshore on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30 am.

The Kids Summer Reading Club, including reading rewards and a scavenger hunt, is in full swing. Sign up for all readers through 7th grade is ongoing in the Children’s Library.

Teens from 8th grade through high school can read to relax and get rewards, too. Relax & READregistered participants get a free beverage at the Café from 3 to 4 pm on Wednesdays in July and August and are invited to get together and talk about the books they’re reading on Monday July 25 and August 29 at 3 pm in the Sheffer Reading Room.

Participants in the adult summer reading program, Hot READS, are also reading whatever they like and getting together to have a chat, every other Tuesday morning at 10 am and every other Wednesday evening at 7 pm.  All the reading recommendations from these chats will be compiled and shared. On Wednesday, August 17 at 7 pm, registered Hot Reads participants will have a party with refreshments, book drawings, and other give-aways.
