Collection Development Policy

Statement of Purpose

The Westport Library offers unrestricted access and resources to satisfy the community's intellectual curiosity, provide enjoyment, and enhance the quality of life for all ages.

This collection development policy is intended to establish the rationale by which the Library develops its collections which will be applied without censorship in the best interests of all Library users.  

The collection is defined in broad terms as materials which are offered  both physically and virtually by the Library for the use of the community.

The Library provides a broadly based and diverse collection of resources and materials with a balance in points of view on all subjects including opportunities for collaborative learning, innovation, and creativity for all users. The Library is committed to collecting material and offering access to a variety of media and resources which inform, educate, entertain, and enrich persons as individuals and as members of society.

The standards of evaluation in choosing informational, educational, and recreational materials apply to all media. As technology continues to evolve, the Library will monitor and evaluate new formats and measure their use.

Enforcement

The provisions of this Collection Policy will be construed and enforced by the Library Director at his or her sole discretion. All decisions, determinations and actions taken by the Library Director with respect to this Collection Policy are final and are not subject to review.

Amendment

The Library Board of Trustees reserves the right to amend this Collection Policy at any time.
