Reverse Your Mood

Do you ever wake up in a bad, cranky mood?  Does the alarm clock often contribute to that feeling?  If so, you owe it to yourself to find a musical work that gives you a positive perspective on the day.

I used to hate getting up at the crack of dawn as a freshman in high school; I was affectionately known as "the grump".  That ended when I heard the Rascals song It's a Beautiful Morning.  For some reason, that song resonated with me and became my audio tranquilizer.  At that time, my mother would often serenade us with Rodger's & Hammerstein's Oh, What a a Beautiful Morning from Oklahoma

I realized that music has the power to calm people.  I utilized that as a counselor at a sleep-away camp; Good Morning Starshine from the musical Hair was the standard bearer in our cabin.

My husband swears by Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck's Take Five as an antidote to the blues.  Rossini Overtures like the Thieving Magpie, Barber of Seville or Italian Girl in Algier are light, fun pieces that invariably put a smile on my face.

What type of music helps you?  Your comments are always welcome.
