Sunday, Oct 9, 2016 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The Carlos Pavan Trio presents a musical tour of Argentina with a selection from classical guitar to tango, folklore and contemporaty compositions for guitar, cello and violin. Members are Carlos Pavan, classical guitar composer and performer, Suzanne Corey-Sahlin, viola, and Gunnar Sahlin, cello.

Carlos Pavan is part of a new wave of modern classical guitar composers with a mix of tradition and influences, both versatile and original. Mr. Pavan blends Tango/Folklore rhythms from his native country with New York jazz harmonies and classical technique/forms. The concert will feature Pavan's contemporary original pieces interspersed with traditional Argentine that demonstrate the connections. Vioist Suzanne Corey-Sahlin and cellist Gunnar Sahlin, are principals in both the Norwalk and Ridgefield Symphony Orchestras where they have also performed as soloists.

Carolos Pavan was born in Argentina and came to New York on a musical scholarship in 2000. Since then he's performed at many renowned venues. His latest CD "Suite del Interior" (original compositions for guitar and string quartet) is a blend of Argentine tango/folk dances, jazz harmonies and classical forms. It has been praised by World Music Report, as "throughout the album that Carlos Pavan shows his ingenuity as a composer who especially understands and uses color brilliantly in his writing and arrangements.” The CD offers works composed, arranged, and produced by Mr. Pavan, recorded with special guest PUBLIQuartet. He is a former student of legendary Jorge Morel, Dave Smey and Pablo Ziegler (Piazzolla's pianist). He has performed internationally in France, Canada, Argentina, Portugal and Ireland.

Suzanne Corey-Sahlin, viola, has studied with Albert Markov, Jesse Levine and Robert Glazer, two years with the Manhattan String Quartet at Music Mountain and recently with Steve Larson of Hartt School of Music. She was also a member of the Tourmaline String Quartet. Suzanne has also performed in Gershwin’s, PORGY AND BESS, and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA throughout the United States, Japan and South America. She is presently violist with the Cypress Piano Quartet, and Trio Delle Corde, teaches privately in her studio in Ridgefield and free lances extensively throughout the Connecticut and New York areas.

Gunnar Sahlin, cello, joined the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 1975. As a member of that orchestra Sahlin participated on tours all over Europe and in the US. In 1979-80 Sahlin studied at Juilliard School of Music in New York City during a sabbatical. In 1987 Sahlin had the opportunity to perform for and learn from Yo-Yo Ma in a Master Class at the Stockholm Concert Hall. Sahlin moved to the US in 1988 and is a musician in Fairfield County and New York. In 2002 Sahlin became Principal Cellist of Norwalk Symphony Orchestra and was Assistant Principal Cellist of Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra 2009 - 2013. Favorite chamber music activities include performing with Trio Delle Corde and the Cypress Piano Quartet with his wife, Suzanne Corey-Sahlin, Principal Violist of RSO.
