Sick From FreedomJim Downs, assistant professor of history at Connecticut College, examines the public health crisis that faced theJim Downs newly-liberated slaves after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 in his book Sick from Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering during the Civil War and Reconstruction. 
This untold story is one of the most bitter ironies in American history—the emancipation of the slaves, seen as one of the great turning points in U.S. history, had devastating consequences for countless people with new freedom.
