Re-scheduled: Authors of Strings Attached: One Tough Teacher and the Gift of Great Expectations
Canceled & Re-scheduled to Tuesday, February 4 at 7 pm.
Authors Joanne Lipman, award-winning journalist, and Melanie Kupchynsky, Chicago Symphony Orchestra violinist, speak about Strings Attached: One Tough Teacher and the Gift of Great Expectations, the story of a remarkable—yet tough—public school music teacher whose students achieved outsize success. Through his former students' eyes, we meet the fiery Jerry Kupchynsky, known as Mr. K, a Ukrainian-born taskmaster who yelled and stomped and screamed, and who drove his students harder than anyone had ever driven them before. Through sheer force of will, he made them better than they had any right to be.
It wasn’t until years later that they realized how much they loved him for it. And at the end of his life, they gathered once more, traveling from every corner of the country and creating a symphony orchestra the size of the New York Philharmonic, to play one last concert together - this time for him.
Joanne Lipman is one of the nation’s most prominent journalists and commentators. She was founding Editor-in-Chief of the National Magazine Award-winning Conde Nast Portfolio, and a Deputy Managing Editor of the Wall Street Journal, where she supervised coverage that earned three Pulitzer Prizes.
Melanie Kupchynsky has been a violinist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for more than 20 years, during which time the symphony has won 21 Grammys. She began studying violin at the age of four with her father and the subject of Strings Attached, Jerry “Mr. K” Kupchynsky.
