11 am: Opening Ceremony and Ribbon-Cutting

Kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the new grand front steps of the Library’s Jesup Green entrance.
 
Join Executive Director Bill Harmer, First Selectman Jim Marpe, Library Board President Iain Bruce and others as we officially open this extraordinary, flexible, leading-edge Library.
 
March up the grand staircase into the transformed Library with the Hartford Hot Several Brass Band, who begins to entertain at 10:30 am.
 

In the Forum

Beechwood Arts will be on hand throughout the day in the Forum engaging patrons in the “Make Connections” necklace project.
 
Look for pop-up concerts in the Forum and the Children’s Department by Vivace, the senior string group of the Suzuki Music Schools of Westport & Orange.
 
11:30 am: Students from he Westport-Weston YMCA Dance Center perform a variety of dance styles.
 
Noon: “Creature” by Balam Soto
Connecticut-based new media artist Balam Soto will transform the Grandstand and the Forum’s video wall into interactive digital art.
 
 
12:30 pm: Coney Island Circus Sideshow
Adam RealMan was born and raised in the legendary Coney Island section of Brooklyn. He’s spent the past seventeen years performing daring and unusual acts with spot on comedic timing in front of nationwide and has been seen on Jimmy Kimmel Live. This sword swallower, strongman and sideshow showman is joined by artists from the Coney Island Circus Sideshow to add magic to the Westport Library.
 
1 pm: A Seat at The Table Live Podcast, one of the podcasts being produced in the Library’s new media studio, is hosted by Lori Cochran and Bill Taibe. Lori and Bill give us a taste of their show with a special Library guest.
 
1:30 pm: Pianist Frederic Chiu gives an encore special guest performance after his success at BOOKED for the evening, showcasing the new piano and the spectacular technology and digital video wall in the Forum.
 
2 pm: Mary Ann Hall's Music for Children and Beyond will be celebrating at the Westport Library with an interactive Family Concert featuring Emily Hall.
 
2:30 pm: Play with Your Food Westport’s lunchtime play-reading series, performs one of their clever one-act plays with a performance that turns the entire space into a stage.
 
3 pm: Podcasting in the Studio with Miggs & Trace Burroughs
 
3:30 pm: Students from the Suzuki Music School of Westport join an ensemble of professional musicians for a concert to end our Grand Opening Day.

On the Grandstand

Connecticut new media artist Balam Soto transforms the Forum and the Grandstand into an interactive digital art installation that creates art on the Forum’s new video wall.
 

In The Recording Studios

Explore the Library’s exciting new state-of-the-art recording studios with activities, demonstrations and presentations.
 

In The Writing Center

The Westport Center for Senior Activities writing program, led by Jan Bassin, hosts hands-on writing activities for the whole family.
 
The Fairfield Scribes are also on hand with drop-in readings and workshops.
 

In The Meeting Rooms

Stop by any of our new meeting and study rooms for a bite-sized learning experience. An expert in each room will be teaching micro-lessons on everything from first aid to art appreciation. Learn five words in a foreign language. Refresh your skills in first aid basics. Experience VR. Take a test run on a musical instrument.

In The Children’s Library

Join our Children’s Staff in celebrating the 50th anniversary of 
Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
 
Participate in building an enormous newspaper cocoon, then celebrate both the Library and the caterpillar’s transformation by making your own butterfly. Other Caterpillar crafts will be available and of course, you can drop by to hear the story.
 

In The Komansky Room

Explore the Library’s new programming space filled with activities, demonstrations and presentations featuring our community partners.
 
11:30 am: Get moving with this YMCA workshop
Noon: Join Earthplace with some pettable animal friends

12:30 pm: See a short film about the Library's Black & White art collection.

1 pm: Westport Historical Society presents.

2 pm: Compost with worms from Wakeman Town Farm

3 pm: Pollinator Pathway planting with the Westport Garden Club

In The MakerSpace

Explore the Library’s new cutting-edge MakerSpace with activities, demonstrations and presentations. Help make an infinity mirror!

In The Café & On the Deck

The Café is the place to refresh and relax all day. Enjoy live acoustic music and the beautiful view of the Saugatuck River.
 
11:30 am-1 pm: Guitarist Glenn Roth plays acoustic favorites in the Café.
