Music: Flamenco and Spanish Guitar

jared newmandeirdre towersJared Newman, classical and spanish guitarist and composer, Deirdre Towers, dancer/choreographer and singer/percussionist Jose Moreno present a tour through 500 years of music and dancing styles, from Spanish Baroque to Flamenco blues. Bring your inner dancer and children of all ages to enjoy this exciting, energetic program.

A native of Greenwich Village NYC, Newman picked up the guitar at age 12, fell in love with classical Spanish guitar in college, and found his passion for flamenco soon after. A long time accompanist for Ballet Hispanico, Flamenco Dance Center, Bard College, noted maestros José Molina and Mariano Parra, Jared currently collaborates with poet/dancer Silvia Siller and dancer Deirdre Towers on a performance series at Mambo 64 and Cervantes Institute, as well as on her films (BLACK) LIGHT, BANISHED. His publications include: A New Anthology of Falsetas for Flamenco Guitar, Bold Strummer, Ltd.; editor: "The Keys to Flamenco Guitar" series by Dennis Koster; AIG Publications; arranger: Five Women Composers for Guitar; Ernesto Nazareth: Brazilian Tangos; Mel Bay Publications.

Dancer/choreographer Deirdre Towers has been involved with flamenco as a performer, lecturer, distributor, and filmmaker for over 25 years, working with Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo, Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts, City Center. Prior to that, she worked as a choreographer for musicals, off-Broadway plays, and concerts. She produced the Dance on Camera Festival co-produced by Film Society of Lincoln Center for 18 years, and currently writes for the web magazine, The Dance Enthusiast.

Singer/percussionist/dancer Jose Moreno stems from a gypsy family originally from Spain who are all accomplished flamenco artists who began working in NYC and Miami in 1930s. A much sought after artist, Jose has worked with most of US flamenco troupes, and studied with the masters in Spain, and performed with the famous singers Carmen Linares and Isabel Pantoja with his mother Estrella Moreno.
