TalkingTED: Try Something New for 30 Days
Enjoy a short recorded talk by Matt Cutts that reminds us that the next 30 days are going to pass whether you like it or not, so why not think about something you have always wanted to change and give it a shot for the next 30 days? Matt Cutts is an engineer at Google, who believes that thirty days is just about the right amount of time to add a new habit or subtract a habit from your life. His talk encourages us to try new things or change habits that will lead us into a discussion on some that we might want to try. Stay afterwards for a discussion.
Some examples of Matt's 30-day challenges include deciding to do an act of kindness or a good deed a day for 30 days. He says that it was a really rewarding month, although coming up with something to do every day was kind of stressful, and he ended up falling back on giving money or tips more often than he wanted. He definitely noticed a mindset shift and started looking for nice things to do. It was good to give himself permission to say “yes” to people more often, too.
He also tried to draw something every day. His goal was that he would pay more attention to creativity and his right brain: drawing, learning guitar, singing lessons, etc. In practice, this was a disastrous failure. He lasted for about 6-7 days, then slipped while on vacation, and never got back into the habit. He wanted to be the sort of person who draws, but even with a 30 day challenge pushing him, he didn’t actually do it. He needed to do some deep thinking about why he didn’t participate in this activity, which he thought he was enthusiastic about.
