WestportWRITES: "Write Your Graphic Novel" Mini-Conference

Saturday, Jan 20, 2018 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Cliff Chiang

WestportWRITES rings in the New Year with an exciting mini-conference focusing on writing and illustrating graphic novels.

The day will feature a one-on-one discussion with Eisner Award-winning illustrator Cliff Chiang (Paper Girls, Wonder Woman). Cliff will sit down with filmmaker and podcaster Anthony Desiato (My Comic Shop DocumentARy) to talk about his career, comic book storytelling, and advice to aspiring creators looking to break into the industry.

Afterwards, Cliff will provide portfolio reviews for artists. (ARTISTS: Please REGISTER HERE to have your work reviewed.)

Following our program, Anthony will host a screening of his first film, My Comic Shop DocumentARy.

Please note that this program is in partnership with our friends at the comic book store Aw Yeah Comics in Harrison, NY, and the entire program will take place at the store.

WestportWRITES is a robust, year-long series designed to take your writing to the next level. Designed to create a support structure along the path to publication, the monthly mini-conferences and workshop-based programming will culminate with a fall 2018 writers’ conference.

Cliff Chiang’s artwork has been hailed for its “fluid and confident storytelling” and “sweeping linework and nuanced style.” Graduating from Harvard University with a joint degree in English Literature and Visual Arts, he worked in editorial at Disney Adventures Magazine and Vertigo/DC Comics before making the leap into freelance illustration. Clients include DC Comics, GQ Magazine, Lucasfilm, Warner Animation, Dark Horse Comics, Dynamic Forces Entertainment, and the ACLU. He is currently working on Paper Girls with writer Brian K. Vaughan. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Anthony Desiato is a lifelong Superman fan, former comic shop employee, attorney, documentary filmmaker, and podcast host. While attending law school, Anthony fulfilled a long-held ambition by turning the camera on Alternate Realities, the New York comic book shop where he worked for more than a decade.

The result, My Comic Shop DocumentARy, screened at film festivals across the country and garnered press in multiple media outlets, including The New York Times. Anthony followed up his debut with the award-winning short By Spoon! The Jay Meisel Story and the feature-length Wacky Man: The Rise of a Puppeteer. He recently conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign for his fourth documentary, 2018's My Comic Shop Country.

As a podcaster, Anthony hosts the shows My Comic Shop History and Flat Squirrel Tales: Beyond My Comic Shop, both of which are available on iTunes.
