Hard-boiled—Noir Films Through the Years: "Brick"

Please see full event listing for date.

"Film noir" is dark and brooding, filled with flawed heroes, sultry women and smoky alleys. Join this journey through the tantalizing streets of noir through the ages, revisiting some classics as well as new works, all culminating in the premier of the new feature film An Inconsistent Story in Stealing, written and filmed by August WestportMAKES filmmakers Connor and Carson Einarsen. There will be a short introduction to each movie by Connor Einarsen.

Brick brings the classic work of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett to life. This film utilizes all of the classic elements of noir in story and character - while foregoing the elements of visual style. Brick has none of the venetian blinds or characters with cigars. Instead, follow Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he searches for his missing ex-girlfriend in the dark recesses of his public high school. But don’t expect a high school drama, this film embraces the language of hardboiled noir and creates a cinematic experience unlike any other. Directed by Rian Johnson. (2005, 1h 55m)

Memento put director Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight) on the map. This film is an intricate weave of misdirection and unique story structure. Taking the classic element of misaligning story from noir films of old, Nolan broaches a new type of tale by telling the story forward and backward at the same time. That sound confusing? Come check out this modern classic and get a taste for it’s very original brand of cinematics. (2000, 1h 53m)

Double Indemnity is the film that many consider to be the epitome of ‘Film Noir’. At the peak of the movement this film utilizes femmes fatale, morally ambiguous characters, striking lighting and of course the classic venetian blinds. While watching this film you will see many stylistic elements that got their start with this film but have perforated off into hundreds of films since. The story tells the tale of an insurance salesman (Fred MacMurray) who falls for a mysterious woman (Barbara Stanwyck) who is bent on killing her husband and collecting the claim. Directed by Billy Wilder. (1944, 1h 50m)
