Engaging the Reluctant Reader: Helping Your Child Learn to Love Books

Please see full event listing for date.

Children who don’t enjoy reading often struggle with some aspect of that all-important skill. It may be reading the words, understanding the vocabulary, or putting all the ideas together once the words have been deciphered. Dr. Margie Gillis, President of Literacy How and a leading expert on reading, discusses what the core components of reading are and shares tips to support your child’s development of those skills—as well as how to motivate him to want to read.

In addition to training teachers in research-based reading instruction through Literacy How, which she founded in 2009, Margie Gillis, Ed.D. has partnered with many CT organizations to close the state’s reading achievement gap, and collaborates with Stepping Stones Museum for Children on the development, delivery, and duplication of the Early Language and Literacy Initiative (ELLI), an evidence-based PreK lab school model. She is a founding board member of Literate Nation, a grassroots organization working to support states in passing literacy legislation, and of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities.

Please see full event listing for date.

POSTPONED due to inclement weather. Check back later for a new date.

Dr. Margie Gillis, President of Literacy How and a leading expert on reading, will discuss such basics as talking with your child, beginning reading and writing activities, as well as red flags that may suggest your child may need extra help. Reading is the most important skill children learn in school. Parents of preschool and early elementary-school children play an important role in helping children with the basic skills needed to enter kindergarten ready to read.
