On Tuesday, April 25, at 7 pm in the McManus Room, Leona will give a workshop on sketching in Notes on an iPhone.

Leona Frank is known chiefly for very large acrylic paintings exploring the "topography" of flowers, but recently she stumbled onto a new drawing tool: her iPhone. On a train ride home from New York, she was writing a reminder in the Notes program on her iPhone and came across some symbols at the bottom of the screen that she'd never noticed before. She tapped on one of them, which issued up a set of drawing tools and palettes, and her drawing adventure with the phone's small screen format (2"x2 5/8") began.

Now Leona frequently draws on her iPhone, using both her fingers and a stylus. She enjoys the challenge of creating art on the phone's diminutive 2”x2⅝” screen, as well as the limitation of the given tools in Notes. A larger screen and a more sophisticated drawing program may be in her future, but, for now, she is committed to the discipline of making the most of these simple tools in her portable mini-studio.

Leona Frank has a BA in studio art from Queens College in New York and an MS in art education from Southern CT State University in New Haven. She has shown her work in numerous solo and juried exhibits around Connecticut and New York State, and most recently added to her roster of awards First Prize in Acrylics in the 2014 20th Annual Mavis Fenner Memorial Juried Exhibition at the Rowayton Arts Center. Her work is included in private, corporate and public collections, including Yale New Haven Health Care Radiation Facility in Trumbull (5 paintings) and Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven (3 paintintgs), Hale & Dorr in Boston, and Linsco Private Ledger in Boston. In addition to painting, she also teaches adults and high school students in her Westport studio.

Maker Faire Westport 2018

Please see full event listing for date.

Maker Faire Westport is part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new. It is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. Call for Makers now open! (Deadline to apply is March 15.)

Maker Faire Westport is returning to Westport for its seventh year. This year’s Faire will be held on Saturday, April 21, from 10 am to 4 pm in downtown Westport, Connecticut. The event is free to attend.

“This year, our theme is #WeAreConnecticut where we will spotlight the people, places and organizations that make Connecticut a great place to live and work,” says Mark Mathias, Founder and Co-Chair of Maker Faire Westport. “We want to showcase the best of Connecticut and the surrounding areas.”

Items that attendees can expect to see this year include:

  • Up to five stages where attendees will be able to hear interesting people with compelling stories, panel discussions and engaging demonstrations;
  • The unveiling of the PlasmaBot, the world’s largest glass and plasma marionette.  At 9 feet tall, it’s an amazing piece of creativity, engineering and light; and
  • Expanded footprint.  We are continuing to expand our footprint to accommodate the increased activity at Maker Faire Westport as well as engage the downtown community.

Many of the favorite attractions, such as the Nerdy Derby and 3D printers, will be at the Faire, but as more people hear about Maker Faire Westport, the event continues to expand to attract a wider creative audience.

More announcements will be made as new attractions are confirmed.

“We are excited that we can continue to provide a forum for our vibrant Maker community to share their innovation and creativity,”says Alex Giannini, Manager of Experiential Learning at the Westport Library and Co-Chair of Maker Faire Westport. “Each year we are amazed by the growing impact Maker Faire Westport is having in our community. We are planning on yet another great highlight to our year-round maker interest!”

“Maker Faire Westport brings together the area’s most innovative ideas and the amazing members of our local Maker community,” added Mark Mathias.  “This event is the largest single-day event in downtown Westport, attracting families, businesses, entrepreneurs, artists and educators from the tri-state area. We are gratified with the reception from community we’ve had over the past six years. We are pleased that not only our name, but our event theme are reflective of the positive impact we’re having on a larger scale.”

Maker Faire Westport began in 2011 as the first official Maker Faire event in Connecticut. It has grown to become Connecticut’s largest event focused on creativity and innovation. Over the past six years, Maker Faire Westport has become a catalyst for tinkerers, artisans, engineers, schools, libraries, companies and communities. More than 50,000 people have attended Maker Faire Westport and many thousands more have benefitted through educational programs, maker spaces, employment opportunities and business growth. This year, organizers expect to welcome a record 12,000 people to the Faire.

Companies that wish to benefit from sponsorship can contact Mark Mathias at Remarkable STEAM.

About Maker Faire

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement.  It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers.  They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.

The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2017 celebrated its twelfth annual show with some 1200 makers and 125,000 people in attendance.  World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in six years to 900+ makers and 95,000 attendees.  Forty larger scale Maker Faires occur in cities around the world—Berlin, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, and Shenzhen to name a few—and over 220 community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires are now being produced in the United States and in 43 other countries around the world.
