Writing the College Essay: From Blank Page to Story

Please see full event listing for date.

Join writing teacher and former college admissions officer Amy Estersohn as she introduces a plan for drafting a college essay. Her talk will cover:

  • The difference between a "good" college essay and a "well-written" college essay

  • Easy tricks for developing essay ideas

  • Sources of inspiring models

  • Tips for reluctant writers

We'll do some practice exercises if we have time, so bring paper and pen/pencil.

Amy Estersohn is an English teacher, a book reviewer and a college admissions consultant. As an undergraduate, she contributed over 350 blog posts to the University of Chicago's college admissions blog, so she knows what it feels like to have to write about yourself for a public audience. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a degree in English, she worked for the Office of College Admissions at UChicago, where she reviewed over 4,000 college essays.

The Westport Library strives to help students meet their goals as they prepare for college. This series, Countdown to College, aims to provide resources for students and parents to help students to prepare academically, socially and emotionally for college. Link to resource guide on these topics.
