Celebrate the Book~ View from Pagoda Hill by Michaela MacColl: Virtual Chinese Calligraphy Workshop
May 10, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 5:45 pm EDT

This event is led by Flushing Town Hall teaching artist Ling Tang.
Calligraphy, a traditional art form with a five- thousand-year- history, is a cultural symbol of China and a carrier of Chinese philosophy. It plays an important role in View From Pagoda Hill. In this workshop, students will learn to write simple Chinese characters with a brush in kai shu, which is standard script. A list of materials will be provided when you register. For ages 9-12.
“The View from Pagoda Hill is incredible and beautifully crafted. The characters, both in Shanghai and America, are wonderfully drawn; they come alive. You have to love Neenah because Michaela MacColl has given her such a personality. It is a lovely book that brought tears to my eyes.” —Patricia Reilly Giff, two-time Newbery Honor- award-winning author
Set in the late 1800s, View from Pagoda Hill is the story of Ning/Neenah, a Chinese-American girl who struggles to find her place in the world when she is forced to leave her home in Shanghai to go live in the U.S. with a father she barely knows. This middle-grade historical novel is based on the family history of award-winning author Michaela MacColl. It earned a Starred review form the School Library Journal.
