Join us for a Parent/Community book topic discussion based on the popular, pivotal New York Times Bestseller that has sparked a “parent movement” with community conversations across the country and in Fairfield County:
HOW TO RAISE AN ADULT: BREAK FREE OF THE OVERPARENTING TRAP AND PREPARE YOUR KID FOR SUCCESS
by Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former dean of freshman at Stanford University, researcher and mother who shares her experience and research on why overparenting is harmful to kids and takes an alternative approach to preparing kids for success.
Tracey Masella, LCSW, Silver Hill Hospital, will lead the discussion with a 15-minute screening of Lythcott-Haims’ thought-provoking TED Talk followed by a book topic discussion on:
• Why overparenting must stop and how to avoid it • Raising kids “another way” and which parent style leads to the healthiest outcome in kids • Age-appropriate skills kids need to develop over time from age 2 to 18 in order to become CAPABLE, INDEPENDENT young adults by 18, ADULTHOOD!
CONTINUING THIS “PARENT MOVEMENT” IN WESTPORT: Potential follow up smaller “book club” discussions will be scheduled in March 2020, if there is enough interest.
For those who are too time-pressured to read this book after the February events, a handout with key highlights, links to author’s short videos and articles will be provided to continue this “parent movement” in Westport to help parents prepare kids for success and raise adults!
Event held in partnership with Westport Public School’s PTA Health, Wellness Advisory Committee, Westport’s Dept. of Human Services
