VersoFest 2023 - SONGWRITING MASTER CLASS

Amilia K Spicer Songwriting Master Class

Friday, March 31, 7pm

Whether you are already a performing songwriter, or just want to learn HOW to start a song, this class will discuss finding your own voice, and turning your story in to a musical moment, as well as tools for getting “unstuck.” An emphasis on using lyrical imagery to create sonic cinema. The end game: to inspire the writer inside of you.

Amilia K Spicer

Spicer is a lauded singer and songwriter who has performed at venues and festivals all over the country, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, WoodyFest, 30A, Americanafest, and the Kennedy Center. In addition to her songwriting class, she will be performing Friday night ahead of the Smithereens.

Amilia K Spicer Extended Bio

Spicer is a singer/songwriter who was raised in rural Pennsylvania and lives in Los Angeles, with a haunting, husky voice and an Americana folk/rock style that evokes “majestic vistas — and shadowy mysteries.” Her 2017 album Wow and Flutter featured contributions from bassist Daryl Johnson (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan), keyboardists Rami Jaffee (Wallflowers/Foo Fighters) and Mike Finnigan (Bonnie Raitt/Taj Mahal), pedal steel player Eric Heywood (Son Volt), and guitarists Tony Gilkyson (X, Lone Justice) and Gurf Morlix (Lucinda Williams). Said PopDose of Spicer’s offering, “Wow and Flutter certainly makes it worth the wait for longtime admirers ... one of the best albums, any genre, of the past decade,” and American Songwriter Magazine lauded Spicer as “a seriously gifted songwriter.”

Spicer pursued a career in film before music became her muse, and she directed three music videos for Wow and Flutter. In addition, she has produced tracks for tribute compilation projects including Neil Young (alongside Kristen Hersh and Tanya Donnelly) and Peter Case (with John Prine and Hayes Carll), appeared on the Safety Harbor Kids Holiday Collection (Billy Idol, Jackson Browne), and is a sought-after harmony singer and arranger.

Spicer was celebrated by the Los Angeles Music Awards, where she was named “Best Americana Artist,” and has performed at venues and festivals all over the country, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, WoodyFest, 30A, Americanafest, and the Kennedy Center. She is currently wrapping up a new album, with a single release for summer 2023.
