Cataloger
The Westport Library is seeking a detail-oriented Cataloger to join our Materials Management team. Reporting to the Manager, Materials Management, this role ensures the accuracy and integrity of the Library's bibliographic and material records and supports the purchase and deaccession of library materials. The Cataloger works across a wide range of formats — adult and juvenile fiction, magazines, adult and juvenile nonfiction, and non-book materials such as toys and kits — helping keep our collection accessible, accurate, and up to date for the community.
Responsibilities
- Ensures accuracy and integrity of bibliographic and material records in the Library Management System
- Receives pre-processed books from vendors, checking for cataloging and processing errors
- Catalogs and classifies materials according to current established standards (MARC and Dewey Decimal Classification)
- Creates original cataloging and upgrades copy catalog records for the Children’s collection and adult fiction materials
- Manages book standing orders, including reviewing, cataloging, and processing
- Manages the serial collection, including receiving, processing, shelving, claiming, and withdrawing materials
- Maintains authority records and performs database maintenance to ensure catalog integrity
- Manages reclassification of items when required
- Completes physical processing of library materials, including covering, labeling, stamping, and packaging
- Serves on Library cross-functional committees or supports projects as needed
- Collaborates with all departments to ensure seamless and excellent service to our community
- Works at the service desk as required
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
- MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent library experience
- Extensive working knowledge of cataloging principles (RDA, MARC, AACR2, LCSH) and the Dewey Decimal system, as well as library procedures
- Prior experience with integrated library systems required; knowledge of Innovative’s Polaris a plus, along with experience using the OCLC cataloging system (OCLC Connexion)
- Ability to stand, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
