Connect – Collaborate – Communicate

For more than 100 years, the Westport library has been at the heart of the town’s cultural activity and we are always looking for friends! Volunteering here is a wonderful way to share your enthusiasm for the Library, make new friends and give back to your community.

Volunteers at the Westport Library, like our staff, work to ensure exceptional patron experiences and adhere to the following fundamental library principles:

  • Excellent public and customer service are the hallmark of our library

  • Empathy and respect are key

  • Treat all patron information with the utmost confidentiality

  • Everybody who works in and with the Library is expected to demonstrate these values

To learn more about becoming a volunteer, please review the opportunities below and contact Jennifer Bangser, our Director of Strategic Community Partnerships at JBangser@WestportLibrary.org.

Book Sales

Volunteer at a Book Sale
Lend a hand at any or all of the three annual book sales (Spring, Summer and Fall). These sales play a significant role in raising important funds to support the Library’s programming and operations and are a wonderful way to engage with a community of book lovers.

Year-Round Book Sale Volunteers
Book sale volunteers evaluate used books for salability. They should also be customer-service focused and hospitable. May also assist with keeping book kiosks stocked at the train station and the beach book cart. Volunteer opportunities are available year-round.

Docents

We are looking for individuals who are committed to providing tours of the Library, highlighting all the features and services we offer. These tours provide patrons a deeper understanding and appreciation of the building design, key features, and help connect people and groups with our staff and services. Tour docents will receive full training and should be able to conduct a thorough tour, lasting approximately one hour.

Programs
& Events

With our exciting new program and event capacity, we are looking for front-of-house volunteers to support evening and weekend events in our Forum, and on occasion, support events in other program spaces.

We need volunteers to help ensure that our events and programs are as well run and hospitable as possible. Our program volunteers assist staff, audiences and talent for such experiences as author talks, performances, lectures and more.

Front-of-House volunteers are asked to welcome patrons to events, assist with distribution of programs and materials, seating, and provide any assistance needed with minimal event set up and serving of refreshments when applicable.
