A Conversation w/ Spencer Platt, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photographer

Two weeks ago, photographer Spencer Platt was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the events of January 6 in Washington, DC. On Wednesday, May 25, the Westport native comes to the Westport Library to talk about the honor and his career in photography and journalism. Spencer will be in conversation with Westport Arts Advisory Committee Chairperson, Nancy Diamond.

Spencer Platt grew up in Westport and attended Staples High School and Clark University. He has been a staff news photographer for Getty Images for over 20 years where he is based in New York City. Spencer focuses on both national and international news stories. His photography has taken him around the world to cover conflicts and news stories in such places as the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. In 2006 Spencer won the World Press ‘Photo of the Year’ for an image taken during fighting in Lebanon. In 2021 he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his team coverage of the Covid epidemic and in 2022 he was a member of the Getty Images team who won the Pulitzer for their coverage of events on January 6 in Washington D.C.

Spencer lives in Brooklyn with his wife and fellow Staples graduate Erica Sashin and his daughter Vivienne. Besides photography, Spencer enjoys driving motorcycles, cycling and time with his family.
