Verso University Presents: History of Jazz Series

September 12, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Event Series Event Series (See All)

Jazz is an American-born art form that reflects, as Duke Ellington once said, “Freedom in Sound.” It is an art of improvisation based on African American roots and is one of America’s greatest cultural innovations.

This four-class program will be conducted by musician and Fairfield University Professor of Music Brian Q. Torff, who will trace the evolution of this dynamic musical force in American life, from its early roots to the modern era. The Library will have copies of Torff’s new book available through its collection for use during the course: Seize the Beat: The Evolution of American Music. The book traces the development of American music from its African roots to the juke joint, club, and concert hall, revealing a culture perpetually reinventing itself to suit the next generation.

Space is limited so please register. It is the hope that participants will be able to attend the entire series.

This event will take place in the Komansky Program Room. Please register for this free event HERE.

(NOTE: If you wish to purchase a copy of Professor Brian Torff's new book, Seize the Beat: The Evolution of American Music, it is available via Eventbrite when you register for a discounted price of $35. There will be a limited number of copies available for purchases on the first day of the course.)
