Dive into the art of science and fishing in this in-depth, instructional course where you'll learn introductory fish anatomy and physiology, biology, ecology, and much more to help advance your knowledge of angling and the natural world.

We encourage all participants to bring a device or notebook for note taking. If weather permits, the class will take a short walk to the Saugatuck River to visually identify information covered in class.

Course Structure

Session 1: We'll start by discussing everything you need to know about licensing, gear selection, finding fishing spots, and understanding regulations. Live demonstrations will cover casting, knot tying, and much more. While the course is intended for individuals 18 and up, school-aged children with a serious interest in fishing are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Whether you're new to fishing, or looking to grow as an angler, this class is for you!

Session 2: In part two, we'll get into the nitty gritty of what makes fish do what they do. You’ll learn the anatomy and preferences of Connecticut’s favorite gamefish, as well as ecology, which will help you catch more fish and waste less time. The class ends with a hands-on demonstration showcasing catch and release procedures, so you can fish with confidence.

About the Instructor

Upon graduating from Quinnipiac University’s Radiologic Sciences program, Michael Santangelo began to apply the skills he learned in the human cadaver lab to his passion for fishing. Years of chasing striper up and down the Gold Coast, casting flies for brown trout, and searching for bass throughout Connecticut’s many lakes pushed him to start his own business guiding clients all over Fairfield County. When he’s not helping others perfect their cast, he operates as a personal care assistant for individuals living with disabilities. You can catch him on YouTube, where he shows off his many fishing exploits!
