This introduction to  hand sewing class offers real-life skill building as we create a camper-designed creature. Step by step, from design to completion, we will cover basic hand- sewing stitches, patterns, construction, decoration, applique, and buttons! This class  allows you to build your hand-sewing skills so you can confidently go where your creativity leads you!

In this three-day participatory workshop you will be challenged to build crazy input devices that connect to your laptop and allow you to interact with Scratch projects in fun and engaging ways. On day one we will learn about the Makey Makey, conductive materials, and explore rapid iteration as we design various game controllers. Day two will be spent turning cardboard into musical instruments that we connect to our computer to make sounds and songs. Finally, on day three, we will get super physical and design some game inputs that really get us moving.

Requirements: Computer with USB port, ability to run https://scratch.mit.edu in your web browser, and have a Scratch account set up before the workshops.

Josh Burker is a Creative Technology Teacher at Marymount School in New York City and is the author of The Invent to Learn Guide to Fun and The Invent to Learn Guide to More Fun, both of which inspire maker to explore the intersection of crafting and technology through creative projects.

Programmable Light Sculpture with New Media Artist Balam Soto

July 12-14, 10-11:30 AM,  The Forum

For students entering Grades 7-10 in Fall 2022

Limit 18; registration required

In-person sessions available for this cumulative, three-day workshop. Attendance at all three sessions is recommended. Specialty supplies will be available to registrants from the Westport Library.

New media artist Balam Soto combines cutting-edge, digital technologies with traditional media. At this workshop, students will construct a light sculpture that can be programmed with a 32-bit controller board. This project was inspired by Balam's current work in progress, Forest of Light, which will be unveiled in June at the Five Points Galley in Torrington, CT.
