Over four sessions, join 25-year veteran of marketing, design, and innovation Randy Herbertson for a comprehensive overview of the current world of graphic design. This class will meet on Wednesdays, from March 6 through March 27, 4-5:30 pm, in the Library's Brooks Place program room.
Participants will gain insight into the dynamic requirements and demands of today's design industry, uncovering personal creative strengths and an understanding of competencies needed in contemporary graphic design, as well as an understanding of the profound impact of design on audiences and society.
Below is an overview of what will be covered each week:
Week 1: Overview of today's graphic design industry: Exploring the needs and essentials skills required in the field, along with trends and the "why in design." Instruction will include insights into uncovering your unique "creative thinking DNA."
Week 2.: Motion communication: Exploring the relevance, art, and science of motion design, including overview of 2D versus 3D applications.
Week 3: Packaging design: A dive into how it differs from other design practice as well as exploration of best practices, including considerations of packaging structure versus graphic design choices. Includes an overview of sustainability in package design.
Week 4: Artificial Intelligence and Design: A demonstration of today's tools and choices, including understanding of the powers of facilitation versus replacing creative talent and professional skills.
About the Instructor:
With more than 25 years of marketing and innovation experience, Randy Herbertson is a visionary leader and a creative problem-solver who helps businesses reach their full potential. As president of The Visual Brand (TVB), an entrepreneurial agency of accomplished professionals, he oversees the strategic direction and execution of breakthrough projects that deliver meaningful results for clients across diverse industries.
Randy's core competencies include brand strategy, concept development, creative direction, social media, digital innovation, and design. He has a proven track record of leading product innovations and corporate transformations for global brands such as WPP, Omnicom, Conde Nast, and E&J Gallo, as well as two independent agencies he has founded.
Randy is passionate about fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and excellence at TVB and beyond. He is an active member of the AIGA (Awarded as 2023 AIGA Fellow), The Westport Library board of trustees, and the Downtown Plan Implementation Committee, and the VOCES8 Foundation. He also mentors emerging companies and individuals in the field of marketing and innovation.
