Building on our work, parent feedback, and student interests over the last several years with Summer Learning Clubs, we are excited to launch a new learning initiative. This new learning plan will incorporate a Project Based Learning model into our already existing and time-tested program. This approach integrates all of our math, literacy, and STEAM activities into a thematic approach for an extended period.  Each week this complete immersive experience will cover a different topic over 2 days.  Mondays center around a blend of inquiry, design, research, writing and the arts.  The Tuesday class builds on the deep work from Monday, and focuses on math, science and revision, testing and technology, with students creating a physical representation of their learning. This longer program will seamlessly blend our traditional activities into a Project Based Learning experience and student-driven study.

Using a Project Based Learning model, students will work together to solve challenging problems that are authentic, curriculum-based, and interdisciplinary. Following this format, learners will decide how to approach a problem and what activities to pursue in their unique approaches. They gather information from various sources and plan, synthesize, analyze, and derive knowledge from it. Their learning is inherently valuable because it connects to something real and organic and promotes essential skills such as collaboration, revision, and reflection. In a culminating activity, students will demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge and communicate this with others. Throughout this process, the teacher's role is to guide and advise rather than direct and manage the student's work.

There will be a short movement and snack break.

REGISTER for Week One (July 11 and 12) HERE.

The inside of the human body is an amazing place. We will explore the major body systems. We are investigating the brain, heart, lungs, and digestive system, as well as skeletal and muscle systems.

REGISTER for Week Two (July 18 and 19) HERE.

We will provide curious students an opportunity to dive into an architectural topic of interest and test out their own design ideas. We will explore architectural themes through art and building activities, design challenges, guided investigations of architectural examples, and special virtual site visits.

REGISTER for Week Three (July 25 and 26) HERE.

Students will explore musicians and instruments. They will have the choice to design a project that demonstrates their reading and research - from composer presentations to musical instruments and even original compositions!

REGISTER for Week Four (August 1 and 2) HERE.

This class will be an exposure to historical events and people. Students will be guided to explore and research a specific person of interest inside the historical context of which they were or are relevant. Learners will look at the intersection points of which the historic individual is present.

REGISTER for Week Five (August 8 and 9) HERE.

This class is designed with the intent to inspire confidence, promote invention skills and study of inventors - and the inquiry process. This is accomplished through collaborative and creative problem-solving activities in order to design and build inventions.

REGISTER for Week Six (August 15 and 16) HERE.

Sports can be academic! The idea of sports and recreation can be a physical activity as well as research and analysis. Sports offer physical activity, structure and competition as well as rivalry.

REGISTER for Week Seven (August 27 and 28) HERE.

Students will study several schools of art movement as well as specific artists. Learner discourse will be encouraged to foster the idea of artistic interpretation and this skill will later be built upon when students shift to the mode of artistic expression. They will be encouraged to create original pieces that model the inquiry into the school or specific artist.

The Summer Learning Clubs are made possible by the continuing generosity of Roz and Bud Siegel.
